Does someone in your home suffer from allergies? Their allergy symptoms may actually be amplified due to your home's HVAC system. Here are a few causes and solutions to allergy issues you should be aware of.
Clean Return Vent Covers
It's difficult to keep your home dust free, which is why it helps to prevent dust from circulating throughout your home due to the HVAC system. Vacuuming the floors is not enough, since you also want to pay attention to the areas around the return air vents. These vents could be pulling the dust back into the system.
The solution is to simply keep the return vents clean to prevent more dust from getting sucked back into the system. This is how dust gets back into the air and comes in contact with people's skin, and if someone is allergic to dust, they will be more prone to having a reaction.
Replace the Air Filter
While many air filters have recommendations for how often to replace them, it really depends on how much you use your HVAC system. A system that is frequently used is going to have the air filter become clogged much faster than in a home that infrequently uses their HVAC system.
Feel free to actually take your air filter out and look at it. Does it look physically dirty, or does it look like it has barely been used? Consider replacing the filter before the recommended timeframe if it is looking particularly dirty. There is no one-size-fits-all timeframe for every home, so you must make a judgement call when you have people in your home with allergies.
Turn on the Furnace Early
Many people wait until they finally need to use their their heat to turn it on. Unfortunately, this means it will be on a day that your home is cold and all of the windows will be shut. All the dust that is resting in the vents will just circulate throughout your home with nowhere to go.
You can always turn on your heat a bit early while it is still warm outside. Open up the windows and place fans in the window that will suck the dust out of your home.
